Spoiler tags are placed to temporarily conceal something (an image, video, hyperlink or a series of messages), and is done in order for the viewer/reader to actively check it out on purpose.

It's a common tool for maintaining the air of curiosity.

Secondarily, it is utilized so that the boards wouldn't be stretched, take for example:

A giant sig

or

A very lengthy journal or piece.

Acctually spoilers are used for spoilers.

You link to not stretch the boards.

Hyperlinks tend to reroute you somewhere else, like a personal blog or a video site, and this takes up a lot of time for some people (to load screens).

Linking is sometimes referred to as lazy, in that aspect and is best done when one is referring to a mass of topics or entities that do not allow a certain permission (such as a series of videos that cannot be directly embedded here, or a series of threads such as a sequential story like Horrid's)
